Jasper the Chia Pet

While watching a Chia Pet commerical, I took one look at Jasper, a Maltese Jack Russel mix and said, "He could be one!" So this is how I made this dog Halloween costume.

Not knowing the best & safest way to dye him green I decided to use green food coloring. Unbeknownst to me at the time, the food coloring didn't wash out... it apparently had to wear out. By the end of January he was back to his usual beige color.

I found some plastic foliage, separated them & glued them to green felt to imitate sprouts growing. The legs were a little difficult to make so I used orange felt to wrap around them. I needed something that was flexible enough so he could walk without restriction... orange felt was the best solution to make this dog costume perfect.

This was my first attempt at making any costume. I realize it looks home made but there was a lot of time and effort put into it to create the Chia Pet illusion.

This is absolutely the cutest! My daughter and I made our furry kids costumes this year! Bentlee (A silver tea cup poodle) was a pepper shaker and Miss Hayzee Mai (a White Maltese) was a salt shaker! This too was my first attempt at a homemade costume, but turned out cute as can be! I love your idea! I wouldn't have thought that food coloring would be permanent either. But at least he was in the Christmas spirit! We go to an annual Halloween party at our Vet office that benefits our local animal shelter. This year there were so many unique participants. There were 3 Yorkies that were together. One was a boxer who was being pulled in a wagon that had been decorated up to look like a boxing ring. The other two were his cheerleaders! Too cute!
