The Maltese Chihuahua mix, or Malchi, is a cross between a Chihuahua and a Maltese.

These mixed breed dogs are often given specific names, but keep in mind that they are not a separate dog breed.

According to Malchi owners, these dogs have a lively personality and come in an array of colors. Read more about this Maltese mix below.

Please do not purchase these dogs from a breeder. There is no need to create more mutts when plenty are available for adoption. If you discover a Maltese mix that would fit well with your family, you can easily adopt one at a Maltese Dog Rescue instead (and for a lot less money)!

These dogs take on the temperament of both Chihuahuas and Maltese. They are courageous, extremely lively little dogs.

  • Highly intelligent
  • Sometimes difficult to train
  • Requires lots of socialization
  • Reserved with strangers
  • Can become slightly dog-aggressive

This dog does best with older, considerate children as they can snap at younger, teasing children. Most people find them to have a strong-willed, intensely loyal personality.

Although most are white or cream, they can come in a variety of colors depending on the Chihuahua used to breed. Since Chihuahuas come in short-haired and long-haired varieties, their hair can be short and scruffy, or long and fluffy.

They may also be non-shedding dogs like a Maltese or shed like a Chihuahua. There is no guarantee of which. Even the same litter can have Malchi puppies with varying degrees of shedding.

They average 4-7 lbs fully grown, about 2-3 lbs smaller than a purebred Maltese.
